With the fall 2016 London shows in full swing, a handful of breakout beauty trends are beginning to gain momentum—but perhaps none more so than the scene-stealing, aphotic effect of a dark lip. Whether onyx, bordeaux-stained, or graphic magenta, cool-toned lips are dominating the runways this season.
In New York, matte, jet-black pigment marked the avant-garde urban aesthetic at Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma, while Marc Jacobs chose obsidian pouts for a surge of gothic glamour. At Rodarte, lips were painted a no-shine merlot that provided a worthy counterpoint for models’s bold, full brows.
Now, the darkness has taken hold on London runways as well: Sibling’s lacquered burgundy lips were the very embodiment of a poison apple; Gareth Pugh upped the rouge-noir factor with a glossy ombré stain. And today at Mary Katrantzou, perfectly shaped black cherry lips rendered any other makeup unnecessary. Stormy weather will soon be a thing of the past—but rain or shine, a slightly sinister lip has never looked so good.
