10 Amazing Hair Moments in Rolling Stones History

the rolling stones

If you need proof that time is on The Rolling Stones’s side, take a peek inside the latest Saatchi Gallery show on King’s Road in London, “Exhibitionism: The Rolling Stones,” which hosted a preview tonight. Amid the five and a half decades’ worth of feature films (they star in nearly 20), concerts, and continent-hopping are photographs illustrating that every follicle of hair remains as ineffably intact on the septuagenarians’ heads today as it was with the band’s 1962 debut. Through each room of the show—the largest exhibition of the band’s memorabilia ever on display—the mythic now four-man lineup of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts (also included are Brian Jones and Bill Wyman) is celebrated not only for their chart-topping hits, but for their cultural influence outside of music. And a glance at the papers in the early ’60s will tell you that right out of the gate, the band’s abbreviated shags made a large enough impact to cause an outcry from the hairstyling industry.

Hairdressers went to the press to publicly complain about the client hemorrhage the band had caused—the British youth seeming to have collectively skipped their appointments in favor of letting their own hair grow long à la their new favorite musical act. The Stones responded in jest, placing an ad in a 1964 issue of the New Musical Express wishing “Happy Christmas to the starving hairdressers and their families.” But who could blame them? Good hair ran in their blood. Jagger’s own mother was a hairdresser, and Richards told NME, “I’ve never had my hair cut by anybody. I do it all myself.” Photos even show Richards taking the scissors to Wood’s hair on occasion.

From partying through their 20s to touring well into their 70s, the band has done everything together—down to the length they snipped their bangs. In celebration of The Rolling Stones’s latest contribution to culture, above are 10 reasons why a band that grows together, grows their hair out together, too.

“Exhibitionism: The Rolling Stones” opens at the Saatchi Gallery in London tomorrow and will be on view until September 4, 2016.
