Cara Delevingne’s Candid Tweets About Depression are Personal—And Powerful

cara delevingne

Cara Delevingne has never been one to hide what she really thinks. Famous for her candid Twitter remarks about paparazzi and Internet slander, her dry sense of humor, and her mastery of inspirational Instagram quotes, the model turned actress has garnered tens of millions of followers on social media for her unguarded frankness. This morning she took to Twitter to open up about an especially touchy subject, her own battle with depression. Setting the record straight about her modeling career after debuting her Saint Laurent campaign yesterday, Delevingne tweeted, “I never said I was quitting modeling. I do not blame the fashion industry for anything. I suffer from depression and was a model during a particularly rough patch of self-hatred.”

That the model is taking time to “learn how not to pick apart my every flaw. I am really good at that,” has struck a chord with her followers, who have already re-tweeted each post thousands of times. But it also speaks to a change in the way that we, as a culture, are open to discussing mental health. The tweets come at the heels of singer Kehlani’s Instagram post about her battles with attempted suicide, and Wentworth Miller’s open Facebook letter about his own emotional struggles, both only earlier this week. Delevingne’s admittance of what is too often seen as a weakness is a refreshing sign of strength—one we can all stand behind.
