The New Braid Is Sleek, Stylish, and Supermodel-Approved

Penelope Disick, Khloé Kardashian, North West

There’s no denying it: Braids are back. From New York to Paris, the Spring 2016 shows ditched air-dried waves and romantic, wispy knots in favor of aerodynamic updos featuring slick, tightly woven single braids (see Proenza Schouler and J.W.Anderson) and rows of miniature plaits (Céline). Then, like clockwork, spring’s official arrival has ushered in a new attitude in hair—braids in particular.

Where models and starlets once favored the beachy, pulled-apart side plait, now a clean, polished approach to pulling the hair off of the face has taken shape. The Kardashian clan has shown that a family that styles fishtail pigtails together stays together, while models Romee Strijd, Ondria Hardin, and Lily Aldridge use the same slicked-back style on their off-duty days. When it comes to the single braid, Ciara reinforces hers with black string, lest it loosen up, while Chrissy Teigen gave a peek at how a braid-bolstered ponytail will last through a Hollywood power baby shower.

Cornrows are getting their day in the sun (Melodie Monrose) and night at the ball (Elena Perminova). And for an update on the milkmaid style Chloë Sevigny served up, some modern advice: When you’re wearing the crown, keep it tight.

Above, 10 takes on spring’s best style—looks that once you complete, you won’t have to think about for the rest of the day.
