These New Smoothie Recipes From Hemsley + Hemsley Will Supercharge Your Day

Come across anyone who doesn’t only drink but actually craves green juice and chances are you have found one of the Hemsley sisters’ 223,000 Instagram followers. Londoners Melissa and Jasmine, whom the British newspapers call “the new Nigellas,” have, over the last few years, exploded onto the wellness scene with their intoxicatingly colorful food photography and fondness for cult ingredients such as chia seeds, coconut oil, and bone broth. Their Hemsley + Hemsley empire now includes a just-opened café at Selfridges in London and a new television show.

The radiant sisters started out as self-taught private chefs specializing in healthy food that happened to be grain-free, sugar-free, and gluten-free—wholesome, hearty dishes like bangers and (cauliflower) mash and (quinoa) risotto. “We’re all about great stodgy comfort food without any of the guilt,” says Jasmine, who is 36 and a dead ringer for Alexa Chung. Their new recipe collection, Good + Simple, offers less complicated recipes than their first book, The Art of Eating Well: colorful Mason jar salads, beetroot Bloody Marys, a coconut milk–chia seed pudding that takes five minutes to assemble (and had my toddler taste-tester calling out for “more ice cream!”).

It also features a section on the colorful and nutrient-packed juices and smoothies that have become a cornerstone of the Hemsley + Hemsley Insta-verse. “Smoothies are great because they’re very versatile and practical—you make one in the morning, drink half, and pack the rest in a canteen and there’s your snack,” says Jasmine. “It’s a brilliant way of consuming your greens if you’re not going to have a big leafy salad,” adds Melissa, 30, who has phone-book-thick black hair and Bettie Page bangs. “Just make sure you drink it slowly and mindfully, in order to digest the nutrients. Don’t slurp it down like an IV drip.”

Here, the sisters share two smoothie recipes created exclusively for Vogue—a sweet cinnamon-flecked berry version and a green iteration with H+H favorites avocado and coconut oil. “I like the green one best,” says Melissa, “but if it’s too hard-core and it might put you off for life, there’s no harm in starting with the berry.”
