Why the Right Shade of Blonde Is the Ultimate Makeunder

Gisele Bundchen

Recently, when we sat down to talk beauty with actress Clémence Poésy, she explained that when her hair is the perfect shade of blonde, it draws enough light to her face to let her get away with wearing no makeup. In person and on camera, it’s true that her color—the handiwork of Parisian whiz Rémy Faure—really does illuminate her complexion, warming it the way a bronzer might.

And it seems that Poésy is not alone in this discovery. In shades ranging from arctic to honeyed, models, actresses, and musicians are proving that striking the right skin-tone-to-hair-color balance utterly defeats the necessity for too much foundation or blush. Known beauty maximalist Iggy Azalea has channeled an ethereal glow in creating a monochromatic continuity between her skin and her long waves, resulting in a newly pared-down beauty approach in Vogue’s April issue. For Miley Cyrus, an acid yellow pixie has allowed her to streamline her morning routine of moisturizer and lip balm. And Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Suki Waterhouse regularly embrace the natural contouring effects of their warm, sun-kissed highlights. Here, a look at eleven shades of blonde that will make you ditch your makeup bag and call your colorist.

For all they have in common—preternaturally lingerie-ready bodies, bombshell blowouts, and a talent for taking kiss-blowing selfies—those who have been crowned Victoria’s Secret Angels are as singular as snowflakes. And although models like Alessandra Ambrosio, Candice Swanepoel, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley all share a need for keeping their lips hydrated through trans-continental flights and the constant climate shifts of far-flung shoot destinations, no two women have the same lip balm requirements. From antioxidant-enriched salves to the best photo-ready beeswax stick, here they share their essential formulas that go beyond moisturizing.

Why Easy Waves and Sunglasses Are a Natural Match: Doutzen Kroes, Miranda Kerr, and More

Doutzen Kroes

If there’s one beauty lesson to be gleaned from frequent flyers, outdoor types, and paparazzi magnets alike, it’s that there’s no better way to transform a bare face and rumpled hair into a thing of Instagram-worthy beauty than with the perfect pair of sunglasses—a concept some of our favorite off-duty models have elevated into an art form. Behati Prinsloo and Doutzen Kroes channeled Almost Famous with textured hippie middle parts and mirrored Ray-Bans. Fresh from the Suite Caroline salon in New York, Alessandra Ambrosio accentuated her caramel highlights with tone-on-tone tortoiseshell frames, while Miranda Kerr enjoyed a sunny spring day with violet-tinted lenses and a neat knot. And discovering the hidden glamour in a low ponytail and a cozy sweater, Sasha Luss posted a selfie wearing gold-rimmed aviators. Here, five easy arguments for greeting the sunny season with bedhead and a new pair of shades.

Alessandra Ambrosio’s Easy Athletic Hair: 4 Post-Gym Looks That Are Good Enough to Take to Brunch

Alessandra Ambrosio

Who better to look to for inspiration than Alessandra Ambrosio, who has made laid-back, off-duty hair a way of life with yoga-friendly topknots, athletic French braids, and simple ponytails that look just as good with spandex as with denim cutoffs and breezy bohemian dresses. Whether you skip the treadmill for a brisk sunrise run, or stick to a spinning class until the big thaw—or book a last-minute flight to warmer waters—here are four sporty hair upgrades that are good enough take to brunch.

The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Miranda Kerr, Lou Doillon, and More

Miranda Kerr Best Beauty Instagrams

This week, a look at our Instagram feeds proved that there are countless ways to unwind. Model Imaan Hammam took a break from a seemingly strenuous hike to post a selfie—the electrical-pronged emoji denoting her “unplugged” state—while Caroline Brasch Nielsen shared an instant postcard from her London run. Meanwhile, Hannah Bronfman reached for a “super charged” green juice in an attempt to reenergize (the snap doubled as an opportunity to show off her hip-hop-inspired manicure). For Louise Parker, it was the classic beauty sleep route, snuggling up on a down comforter swaddled in a white terrycloth robe and cozy cotton socks. Artist Jeanette Hayes reminded us with tongue-in-cheek humor that although important, guilt-free indulgences are often short-lived, while Lou Doillon took a backseat selfie en route to a downtime destination (hopefully) worthy of her idyllically tousled mane. For our part, we’ll be taking tips from each of the best beauty Instagrams this weekend, culminating in a Sunday night viewing of Dirty Dancing, inspired by Miranda Kerr, whose “I carried a watermelon #DirtyDancing” caption was just one more reminder of why we love the seasonal warm weather fruit.

Good Hair Runs in the Family: Jessica Alba, Ciara, and More Step Out with Their Mini-Me’s

Ciara and Future Zahir Wilburn

After little North stole the show at Paris Fashion Week with devastatingly cute front row meltdowns and fuzzy topknots, fashion’s first toddler is at it again, this time upstaging Kim Kardashian Wests back-to-black hair-color debut with equally adorable twin ballerina buns. And she’s not the only celebrity offspring showing that good hair is all in the genes: Alessandra Ambrosios daughter Anja has inherited her mom’s Brazilian good looks, while Keri Russell’s three-year-old Willa’s straight bob is every bit as chic as her mother’s sunny ombré waves. Speaking of hair color, we wouldn’t be surprised if Sarah Jessica Parker based her honey-streaked brunette on daughters Tabitha and Marion’s pitch-perfect caramel ringlets. From Ciaras son, Future, to Jessica Albas girls, Honor and Haven, here are six of our favorite mini-me beauty moments.

The Case for Growing Your Hair Out: Gigi Hadid, Victoria Beckham, and More

Gigi Hadid

While boyfriend fits and denim flares may creep into our spring wardrobes, nothing will replace the leg-lengthening effects of a skinny jean. But for those looking to take an elongated silhouette one step further, consider pairing the look with a headful of waist-length waves. For Amanda Seyfried and Gigi Hadid, the simple denim-and-tee combination was elevated to bombshell status as their flaxen lengths caught the breeze. Touching down in Los Angeles, Christina Hendricks shook off the look of her fifties Mad Men role with a modern wardrobe change and second-day, shoulder-grazing curls. Olivia Wilde rode out New York City’s lingering winter weather with sun-kissed, texturized ombré highlights, aviator sunglasses, and faded jeans that will look just as good when an oversize coat is no longer necessary. Here, five reasons to grow your hair out—and hold onto your skinnies—this spring.

The Best Beach Hair for Seaside Escape: From Nicola Peltz’s Salty Waves to Alexa Chung’s Breezy Bob

Photo: Courtesy of Nicola Peltz

Embracing a little seasonal static or letting a gusty day tousle city hair into second-day pieces may tide you over until beach season—but let’s face it, there’s nothing quite like the sun-soaked bliss of salty, styled-by-the-breeze waves. Spotted on Instagram, Alexa Chungs billowing layers reminded us that a quick dip in the sea beats the best surf spray, while Nicola Peltzs windblown strands made us long to trade in our beanies for a straw hat. Over in Turks and Caicos, Joan Smallss curls were reason enough to book a flight to the Caribbean—and we’re certain that the perennially vacation-haired Gisele Bündchen didn’t have to pack a diffuser for her trip to Brazil. Here, a look at vacation hair at its finest—and why your next seaside jaunt can’t come soon enough.

Tracing the Beauty Benefits of a Baby Bump: Why Keira Knightley Has Never Looked Better

Keira Knightley pregnant

Keira Knightley turns 30 today—and as we sifted through a year’s worth of pictures, we couldn’t help but notice that her best beauty moments of late have also featured a baby bump. Since announcing her pregnancy in December, the actress has debuted a series of flawless looks that, along with an inspired lesson in maternity dressing, demonstrate how to make the most of a few welcome beauty benefits when you’re expecting. Early on this year at the Golden Globes, her supernatural glow managed to upstage her trademark smoky eyes and plush lips—while a few days later, her radiant skin took center stage with dialed-down eye makeup and a fresh pop of hibiscus lipstick. Not that there wasn’t some rebellion in all that expectant romance: Hitting an awards show with tousled waves pulled back to reveal a punkish row of ear cuffs, Knightley didn’t shy away from a little edge—or, for that matter, an amped up bombshell factor courtesy of a textured, noticeably thicker mane at screening in London. Here, a timeline of her top five pregnancy beauty looks.

The Twinning Hairstyles of our Favorite Man Bands: From One Direction to the Jackson 5

One Direction

Yesterday it was announced that Zayn Malik will be parting ways with One Direction, turning the five-member band into a foursome that is now only Four-Fifths Direction. As fans cope with the adjustment and the band reworks its musical arrangements (who will hit those high notes now?), we have to wonder: Where were the signs? Of course, there was 2014’s curious album title, Four. But maybe the real death knell came earlier, when Malik communicated his independence visually, by ditching the band’s original uniform look of side-swept man bangs for a sleeker, more gravity-defying crop. After all, nothing signals your commitment to your band, your musical teammates, like matching hair.

In fact, looking back at some of history’s most beloved all-male musical groups proved that no matter the genre or country of origin, twinning hairstyles are something of a universal man-band phenomenon, from the Jackson 5’s perfectly round Afros to the Beatles’ swingy mop tops to Menudo’s wispy fringe. After all, didn’t Led Zeppelin’s flowing, airborne curls bring another level of harmony to their stage presence and their synchronized motorcycle rides? Speaking of being in sync, the early aughts found Justin Timberlake, J.C. Chasez, Lance Bass & Co inexplicably all hankering for a heavily gelled, spiked style—a look that Timberlake took as far as his frosted curls would allow. You could chalk it up to the convenience of having the same on-tour hairdresser, or to simply spending so much time together that they start to adopt one another’s looks—but matching cuts, textures, and highlights seem to be part of the very fabric of what keeps a group of male musicians together. Here, a look at the styles that made our favorite boy bands beautiful.

Watch FKA twigs’s Matching Makeup and Manicure in Her New Music Video

twigs-2x

Today, FKA twigs offered the first glimpse of her new EP, due out later this year, with another visually arresting self-directed music video. In “Glass & Patron,” the idiosyncratic artist gives viewers any number of reasons to be impressed: her hypnotic voice, her tangle of braids, and her ability to hold an airborne split among them. But it’s her matching metallic makeup and nails that prove equally mesmerizing. While the singer commands a dance battle—her hip-grazing hair emphasizing each move like motion lines—her platinum WAH Nails manicure and reflective silver eye shadow catch the light. The high-impact effect puts even the best highlighter to shame—because when your moves are that fresh, why shouldn’t the spotlight be on you?

Makeup Artist Pat McGrath’s Insta-Beauty Diary: A Look Back at the Fall 2015 Shows

Pat McGrath Owen Wilson Ben Stiller Zoolander Valentino

“The return of makeup, from zero to full throttle,” is how backstage whiz Pat McGrath described the message of the fall 2015 collections in New York City, Milan, and Paris. “Things ranged from pure untouched skin to the bravest, most individualistic interpretation of beauty you can imagine.” For McGrath, who documented each look on her Instagram account (@patmcgrathreal) for her legions of faithful fans, that meant conjuring anything from tough-edged kohl eyes (Louis Vuitton) and pristine complexions (Valentino) to stained red lips (Bottega Veneta) and dramatically painted faces (Maison Margiela). Through it all, she says, there was one common theme of the season: “It was about character, bringing the face to life, capturing the personality of the girl.”

For many, the exquisite facial jewelry McGrath created for designer Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy—eyelashes dropping with pearls, suspended ruby teardrops, and glittering septum rings—crystallized the concept, becoming a runway highlight of the season. Although, according to McGrath, one backstage moment also ranked high on her list: the selfie she snapped with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson backstage at Valentino, where the actors made their much-documented Zoolander cameo. Here, a look back at her best Fashion Week beauty moments, which promise to offer fresh makeup inspiration as soon as this weekend.

6 Reasons Why Pale Pink Lipstick Is the New Nude, from Victoria Beckham to Jessica Alba

Diane Kruger

Just in time for the new season, the nude lip trend seems to be undergoing a metamorphosis, with creamy pale pinks spotted on even the most loyal beige gloss fans. Victoria Beckham looked impressively fresh after a long-haul flight to Beijing with a cool pastel tone, while Jessica Alba kicked up her earthy makeup with a swipe of glimmering rose gloss. Also thinking pink was Diane Kruger, who paired a floral appliqué dress with matching lips and cheeks—a tone-on-tone look Rihanna took to the next level with her makeup expertly calibrated to her cotton candy fur stole. Just in time for a quick weekend beauty upgrade, Gigi Hadid and Alessandra Ambrosio showed that a swipe of tulip pigment was made for off-duty hair and sunglasses. Here, six pretty shades made for the first day of spring—even if it arrives in the form of another snowstorm.

Post-Winter Hair Rehab: How to Bring Tortured Strands Back to Life

Photographed by David Sims, Vogue, February 2007

Au revoir, sturdy Sorels, you’ve served us well—and a fond farewell to our favorite Fair Isle sweaters. Every year around this time, we get the sudden, irrepressible urge to cast off all remnants of the winter season. That same impulse for a spring renewal extends to our hair, for which, sadly, there is no warm-weather replacement. Fortunately, a new crop of restorative products is more than up to the task of reinstating shiny, healthy-looking strands.

Shu Uemura’s Instant Replenisher Rapid Repair Serum—a pro treatment spray with moisturizing magnolia extract and cuticle-bolstering ceramides—is the closest we’ve come to a two-inch trim in a bottle; rinse it out after five minutes for bouncy, easy-to-comb hair. A scoop of legendary Parisian colorist Christophe Robin’s detoxifying Dead Sea salt scrub exfoliates sensitive scalps when massaged into the roots, then slowly dissolves into a hydrating cleansing lather when used in lieu of shampoo. The harmonious blend of ten garden-plucked ingredients found in Philip B’s ultrapure oil is made to be applied to dry hair in sections to cultivate glassy levels of shine. And when March showers induce clouds of baby hair frizz, Redken’s lavender oil–infused hair sheets restore calm in a flash.

From moisturizing masks with genuine reparative powers to clever problem-solvers that conceal what can’t be healed (that would be you, shattered ends), these eight transformative formulas will chase every last trace of winter from your hair.

The Best Vacation Hair on Instagram: From Drew Barrymore’s Rumpled Waves to Hanneli Mustaparta’s Slept-In Bob

Hanneli Mustaparta

It may be the warmest global winter in history but you wouldn’t know it in the States, where another cold front has our wanderlust kicking into high gear just in time for a well-timed spring escape. Drew Barrymore, who has been documenting her foodie trip through Tokyo on Instagram, reminded us that a rumpled head of waves isn’t just for the beach-bound—and that few strategies beat the jet lag–defying chic of a navy cap and good sunglasses. Over in Paris, Hanneli Mustaparta went native with equally appealing simplicity, greeting the day with a slept-in bob and liquid French flick, while Valentina Zelyaeva embraced the steamy end of the South African summer with a loose side plait and a fedora in Cape Town. Still, it was Russian expat Natasha Poly who took the concept to the next level in Los Angeles with the kind of sun-bleached, Venice Beach babe tousle only a summer spent catching waves—or the hands of a gifted colorist—can provide. With two days left before the weekend—hey, a last-minute trip can still be pulled off!—here’s a look at destination-inspired vacation hair at its finest.

The Rise of the Ombré Bob: Rose Byrne, Jessica Alba, and Jourdan Dunn’s Sunny Crops

Rose Byrne

If you distilled the season’s most style-defining hair trends—textured waves, chin-length chops, and the perfectly calibrated shade of bronde—into one highly covetable look, you might end up with Rose Byrnes honey-dipped bob. The actress debuted a fresh dye job at SXSW yesterday—following on the heels of Jessica Alba, who razed off her long blonde tips, leaving her with a subtle ombré that still has plenty of depth thanks to her darker roots and pale face-framing pieces. But let’s give credit to Jourdan Dunn, who has made the style her own for months with a blunt cut that fades from a rich chocolate to a soft caramel. Here, three spins on a look that It-Parisiennes, surfer girls, and red-carpet regulars can all agree on.

5 New Nail Treatments That Add Up to a Perfect Ten: From an Overnight Brightening Mask to a Keratin-Boosting Cream

Nails

This may very well be the year of the un-manicure. Timeless, hydrated, healthy nails are more prevalent than ever. Which is why—in a world where acetone, stubborn glitter polish, and snag-prone edges are everyday issues—it’s smart to protect your tips. For this, consider a flurry of innovative new treatments, designed to undo the damage inflicted by overly aggressive manicures and nail art, that are hitting shelves this month.

CND, for example, has taken protective keratin technology and literally applied it to nails with its new RescueRxx, a daily massage-in treatment that dramatically reduces peeling and white spots. If you’d rather just nap your way to healthier fingertips, Ciaté is also getting in on nail rehydration with its Knight in Shining Armor overnight “mask,” which moisturizes while you sleep and washes off in the morning.

If weekly polish changes have left your nails weak or prone to breakage, Sally Hansen’s new 18K Gold Hardener was designed to make them stronger, harder, and shinier, too—ideal for dulled, winter-weary hands.

When a bold red manicure is a must, smart new preventative measures can keep bright colors from staining your nail bed. NYC’s Strip Me Off Base Coat forms a non-damaging peel-away film over nails that simultaneously allows you to ditch the acetone. And, for the future of chip-free polish, Caption’s new color system promises the durability of a gel manicure without the need of UV light or chemical soak removal. So if and when you decide to take it off, your nails will look just as healthy in the buff.

The 10 Best Beauty Instagrams of the Week: Karlie Kloss, Ben Stiller, and More

Photo: Courtesy of Mario Testino

How do you get into character? On Instagram this week, some of our favorite celebrities wove tales to illuminate the beauty photos they posted. Rita Ora joked that her straightener had broken, sharing a straight-faced photo of her blond hair teased out into a luminous afro. January Jones captured our attention with a hair dye before-and-after, saying she was going “#backtomyroots” by taking her hair from blond to strawberry (“Call me ‘Frenchie’” was her character-driven caption). Georgia May Jagger posed in a military uniform on set with a horse named Mr. Bean, teasing our imaginations about what the Rimmel London ad she was shooting will look like. Meanwhile, Karlie Kloss was snapped running past Notre Dame in Paris, playfully adding “running from the hunchback!” under the picture. But perhaps the best character reprise was that of Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, who brought their Zoolander 2 selves to the Valentino show in Paris. Check out Stiller’s selfie—it’s gorgeous, darling.

Which SXSW Beauty Look Is Right for You? A Packing Guide by Festival

Confessions of a Skin Care Addict: What Happens When One Vogue Editor Stages Her Own Intervention

Skincare Addict Skincare Products

There are moments in your life when you’re able to see yourself as an omniscient observer—those out-of-body experiences that propel you to look at your life and ask in a Talking Heads refrain, “How did I get here?” One such moment occurred on a recent vacation, when I experienced a pang of terror after accidentally applying a face serum in my nine-step skin care routine in the wrong order. Reading that now, it sounds like a no-sweat misstep, but at the time, it was a nerve-racking game ender that sent me into a spiral of self-loathing. I wish I was exaggerating. How did I get there, you ask?

As a beauty editor, it’s an occupational hazard to amass skin care products in droves. Through recommendations by facialists, chic colleagues, and seriously gorgeous interviewees, I had built an arsenal that consisted of one face wash, one toner, three serums, three creams, and one sunscreen, occasionally throwing in a rosewater spray for good, hydrating measure. The entire routine took at least ten minutes. That’s ten minutes of rubbing and massaging my face. And it all felt so luxurious . . . until I effectively coddled my skin into becoming the corporeal equivalent of a spoiled child willing to publicly embarrass me at the slightest offense.

Things had gone too far. I needed an intervention. For this, I called the New York City dermatologist, Jeannette Graf. “I’m a beauty hoarder, too,” she admitted sympathetically over the phone before offering up a reality check. All I really needed for clean, healthy, and happy skin was one cleanser, one sunscreen, and one retinol-based product. “You want to protect your skin during the day and defend it at night,” explained Graf, who suggested that I ditch the toner, and instead rely on a “pH balancing cleanser” that was designed for my skin type but wasn’t overly fragrant, stripping, or mechanically exfoliating. After which, a simple moisturizer would do the trick; dry complexions like mine could find the right moisture balance with an antioxidant serum followed by a face cream—and one with hyaluronic acid, like Mario Badescu’s Hydrating Moisture cream, would pack an extra punch.

After sealing things off with sunscreen—Graf recommended EltaMD’s Broad Spectrum for its “elegant” use of zinc oxide—I’d be ready for the day with four products or less. Better yet, my nighttime routine could be even simpler—amended by switching my morning serum for a retinol and forgoing the sunscreen. Graf likes Avène’s Eluage because “its natural form of Vitamin A is nonirritating.”

It sounded straightforward enough, but, for a second opinion, I reached out to the ultimate beauty minimalist, fashion stylist Stevie Dance, who manages an enviously healthy complexion without the help of so much as mascara. Naturally, she takes an even more laid-back approach. “I think skin is more reflective of your lifestyle and mental health than it is of an expensive cream, serum, or surgery—when you’re happy, your skin has a different texture than when you’re miserable.”

That being said, Dance does keep a few products on hand, including Tracie Martyn’s Amla Purifying Cleanser (which is rich in alkalizing Vitamin C), SkinCeuticals’s CE Ferulic Acid (an antioxidant serum she refers to as “magic”), and Dr. Hauschka’s Revitalizing Day Cream to lock in hydration.

Combining the advice of both Graf and Dance, I stashed my overcompensating routine and stocked up on five straightforward products—with the exception of Caudalié’s hydrating face mist, which I will never feel complete without. When it comes to the new products that make their way across my desk on a daily basis, I’m getting better at making a tighter edit. Today, my medicine cabinet has never been cleaner, my gym bag and luggage never lighter, and my skin never more balanced. Here’s to doing more with less.

The Style-Defining Power of Bangs: 5 Case Studies on Fringe, from Dakota Johnson, Gemma Arterton, and More

Dakota Johnson

Part of the thrill of getting bangs is that—notwithstanding the inherent risk factor or awkward growing-out phase—done right, they’re a game changer.

Take Gemma Arterton, whose classic brunette bob got a fresh dose of bombshell appeal, thanks to a glossy new curtain of fringe long enough to push to the side. Blogger Susie Laus heavy, eyelash-skimming bangs offer graphic definition whether she’s wearing her trademark topknot or letting her blunt cut down, while Behati Prinsloos brow-skimming length looks good straight or wavy, and allows her to switch between a side or center part.

There is also, of course, the subject of their inherent sex appeal: Jeanne Damas’s self-snipped set provides an insouciant counterpoint to her pillow red lips, and Dakota Johnson s tapered pieces strike a similar balance between sultry and innocent—a look she’s made her own since wrapping Fifty Shades of Grey. Here, five good reasons to consider taking the plunge.

Taylor Swift’s Legs are Insured? A Look at Her Favorite Limbs in Gifs

The 15 Best Street Style Beauty Moments from Paris

Photographed by Phil Oh

Parisienne beauty is a study in balance—if hair is expertly coifed, makeup will likely be minimal, while slept-in, rumpled waves are best paired with a showy red lip or swipe of kohl liner. The enigmatic and seemingly effortless brand of glamour specific to the City of Lights was well documented this week by photographer Phil Oh, whose lens found focus in carefree Fashion Week attendees like stylists Nell Kalonji, Agata Belcen, and Emma Wyman, who hit the streets sporting expertly undone hairstyles colored shades of lilac, cobalt, and orange, respectively. Stylish twosomes like blogger Camille Charrière and stylist Alexandra Carl embraced honey-tinged California waves that appropriately accented the tone of their seventies-inspired looks, while model Frederikke Sofie Falbe’s fuzzy curls offset a neutral face and graphic glasses. Model Maartje Verhoef upped the ante with a to-the-brow dusting of earthbound orange shadow, while Aymeline Valade relied on a topknot to showcase a decidedly glowy complexion. But leave it to Solange to deliver a dose of updated Parisian glamour—the singer was spotted at Carven with her signature Afro parted down the middle, her orange red blush supplementing dark-lined eyes, and a chic, furry red coat.

A Brief History of Pink Hair, From Brigitte Bardot to Fernanda Hin Lin Ly

“Dye hair pink. Buy enormous white coat” was our Beauty Director’s Instagrammed note to self after seeing Nicolas Ghesquière’s dynamic, fall show for Louis Vuitton today. Paired with Vuitton’s tech-meets-luxe looks, model Fernanda Hin Lin Ly’s bubble-gum-colored hair captured the audience’s attention with its futuristic vibe. But it’s not the first time pink hair has gotten star billing—the history of the shade is long and varied, ranging from romantic to counter-culture. Musicians—including punkish Gwen Stefani —are the most enthusiastic adaptors of the look, but they are not the only ones to see the world, and their strands, through a rose-tinted lens. In Two Weeks in September, for example, one of the ways Brigitte Bardot expresses her coquettishness is with a bobbed, rosé champagne–colored wig. Decades later, Kate Moss would morph from waif to bombshell with fuchsia dye. (Take that, Jessica Rabbit!) In Sofia Coppola’ s Marie Antoinette, a flamingo updo was dreamily elegant. And today, softer hues are in the pink. Here, a look back at moments in pink hair.

6 Beauty Lessons from Paris Fashion Week: From Color-Blocked Eye Shadow to the Future of Updos

Paris Fashion Week Beauty Lessons

In the city of laissez-faire air-dried waves and clean skin, the runways of Paris Fashion Week provided plenty in the way of no-makeup makeup and real girl hair—but our favorite beauty moments came at the hands of bold beauty risks. Whether taking a cue from the color-blocked eye shadow at Céline, bright lips at Saint Laurent, or any number of forward-thinking hairstyles crafted backstage, here are six beauty lessons to push you in a new direction for fall.

The Dark Romance of Alexander McQueen’s Fuzzy Clouds and Rosy Faded Cheeks

The Best Raven-Haired Beauties of All Time: From Elvis to FKA twigs

FKA twigs

It wasn’t until Alexander Wang sent a troupe of inky-haired models down his fall runway that brunette mania took a turn toward even darker impulses, setting off a wave of rich midnight shades that call to mind the goth-punk magnetism of Siouxsie Sioux. Not that the sudden resurgence of obsidian hair only draws on counter-cultural impulses—in fact, when you consider the wealth of iconic raven-maned beauties throughout history, the real question is: What took so long? Would the idea of tall, dark, and handsome pack the same punch without the image of Elvis Presley and his slick pompadour etched into our collective minds? Or the archetype of the brooding, angst-y teen without Winona Ryders onyx pixie? Consider the original dark beauty, Snow White, whose ebony locks, alabaster skin, and blood-red lips stood out from a world of flaxen-haired fairy-tale princesses in our imaginations—offering a striking individuality that British stunners Erin O’Connor and Stella Tennant continue to bring to the runways and Insta girls Kendall Jenner and Liu Wen inject with fresh interest. Off the runway, fashion’s most hypnotic faces continue to draw inspiration from the sable-haired beauties of the past. It’s hard to imagine FKA twigss idiosyncratic beauty would be as powerful without her Frida Kahlo–inspired bushy brows and slick center parts. From Liza Minnelli to Rei Kawakubo, here’s a look at the eternal allure of raven hair.

Hair Twins: A Paris Street Style Phenomenon in the Making

Paris Fashion Week street style

Perhaps it’s due to spending four consecutive weeks side by side, jetting between cities on identical itineraries, but the friends and colleagues attending fashion month are starting to take on one another’s beauty looks. Yesterday afternoon in Paris, blogger Camille Charrière and stylist Alexandra Carl had more than just high-waisted pants and earth-toned color schemes in common—their sun-kissed blonde piece-y waves were nearly interchangeable. A brunette duo took a more blunt approach, their straight chestnut lengths emphasized by coordinating black ensembles. Model Sunghee Kim and a friend collectively decided to forgo unpinning their sleek, onyx side-parted runway ponytails after a show, wearing them out into the sun together. The takeaway? When heading out of town with your hair soulmate, take time to sneak in an appointment to cut, color, and style together.

It’s only fitting that the week’s best beauty looks would meet the Paris fashion shows with laissez-faire hair at its finest. Kendall Jenner , Hanneli Mustaparta , and Dakota Johnson stepped out in rumpled, second-day waves that looked like they had been styled by the Seine breeze. Makeup felt just as Parisienne with a range of reds turning up on the lips of Kerry Washington , Zoe Saldana , and Kate Upton .

Personalized Ponytails: Get the Street Style Look

Photographed by Phil Oh

If the runways of fall fashion week have taught us anything, it’s that classic hairstyles will be personalized with every iteration of bow, comb, and pin. And while we wait for September’s array of statement jackets, we’ll take a page out of Giovanna Battaglias book with a slicked-down mane paired with a signature accessory. Echoing the beauty looks created this season for Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Lanvin, Suno, and Proenza Schouler, we’ll secure the sparkling updo with shine-inducing hairspray. The only thing more idiosyncratic would be a customized white button-down.

The Great Brow Grid: Tracing Iconic Eyebrows Through History From Audrey Hepburn to Cara Delevingne

holding-brows-grid

For the fall 2015 collections, we’ve seen brows dramatically penciled in (Marc Jacobs), bleached to oblivion (Rick Owens), and feathered to plump perfection (Jil Sander). With every transition, the models became almost unidentifiable, which got us thinking: Are eyebrows the most recognizable feature on a person’s face? A quick look back at some of the most iconic arches in history proved that so much personality, style, and expression comes down to those little strips of hair. For example, you’ll instantly recognize one set of signature nineties supermodel brows, brushed up and fine with a sharp arch, as well as the filled-out, furrowed beauty of one famous artist’s set. But there are some surprisingly close matches, too. You may think the strong, block shape of Cara Delevingne’ s brows was unprecedented when she came on the scene, but the graphic caterpillar look was the trademark of another famous face decades before. From bleach-blonde to drawn-in, take a moment to click through these double arches. Then, if you must, grab your tweezers—or perhaps throw them away!

3 Ways to Pair Your Hair With Red Lipstick: Emma Watson, Olivia Palermo, and More

Emma Watson

Even with the most classic of lip colors, context is everything: What shade can invoke an easy, left-bank elegance or punkish edge like a swipe of red pigment? Spotted at Elie Saab over the weekend, Olivia Palermo lent her sangria stain a crisp polish with a razor-sharp center part, while Emma Watson relaxed a fiery matte mouth with laid-back waves tucked behind her ears at the Facebook headquarters in London. Paired with a fluffy topknot and glossy skin, Aymeline Valades slicked-on crimson felt just as right front-row at Stella McCartney as it would have for an off-duty day of denim. Here, three perfect ways to pair your lipstick with your hairstyle.

A Statement Eye for Every Occasion: The Graphic Beauty Looks of Fall 2015

Photographed by Kevin Tachman

For the lover of a statement eye, the fall 2015 runways have provided no shortage of options. Painted in shades of cobalt, emerald, black, and white, the looks came in every shape and texture. New York saw inky pigment smudged onto the inner corners of models’ eyes at Proenza Schouler, where days before it had been painstakingly drawn onto the outer edges at Suno. In Milan, eyeliner was taken to new extremes—unapologetically smoldering along the top and bottom waterlines at Versace topped by Pat McGrath’ s “massive” amounts of mascara, and daubed on in “rough brushstrokes” that mimicked eyelashes by Peter Philips at Fendi. Judging by the collections we’ve seen so far, Paris shows no signs of slowing down—at two of the city’s most directional shows, Dior and Céline, color-blocked arches of opaque eye shadow accompanied the animal prints and fur accessories we’ll undoubtedly be snapping up in September.

The Best of Björk: A Look Back at the Musician’s Most Memorable Beauty Moments

Bjork

Today, the Museum of Modern Art debuts “Björk,” an innovative look back at the musician’s more-than-20-year career, featuring interactive audio exhibitions that appropriately mirror Björk’ s avant-garde essence. The three-floor retrospective showcases unique riffs on albums like Biophilia, Debut, and the newly released Vulnicura supplemented by a spoken narrative and memorable visuals and costumes.

Aside from a definitively separate take on the arts—she is often credited with introducing electronica to the pop music scene with her first solo album, Debut, in 1993, and her role as Selma in Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark is as haunting as the musical numbers that invade the plotline—Björk has defined her pop culture presence with a collective of experimental beauty looks that stir up conversation.

She arrived on the scene in the late eighties with The Sugarcubes, an alternative rock group that provided an ideal venue for the singer’s playful pigtails and tousled, piece-y chop. After going her own way, she began to embrace the funky and futuristic style of the times, expressed by looped braids and all-over crowns of Bantu knots. It certainly helps that her icy blue eyes and raven hair serve as an ideal backdrop for a pop of color, best demonstrated by the cover of Post, her third studio album. And who can forget Björk’s red-carpet walk at the 73rd Academy Awards—a subtle smile showcasing rose-tinted lips and cheeks, a swan neck coiled around her own. With time and age, her looks only grow bolder. For 2011’s Biophilia cover, she donned an exaggerated cloud of neon orange curls accompanied by a celestial shade of cobalt eye shadow. Here, a look back at Björk’s nine best beauty moments.

In Honor of Daylight Saving: 7 Stylish Sleep Masks to Make the Most Out of Your Night’s Rest

Photo: © HBO

The first indication of spring, Daylight Saving Time should bring a welcome relief. But, with temperatures in a frigid holding pattern, the only immediate effect you will feel is the loss of one hour of precious sleep. To ensure a deep, restorative forty winks in less than eight hours, precautionary measures should be taken: You could lull yourself into a state of relaxation by spritzing your hair with Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille, misting your pillows with a soothing lavender spray, or keeping a bedside bottle of Melatonin at the ready. But to both literally and figuratively block the world out each evening, a sleep mask is the ultimate REM–inducing indulgence. From Mimi Holiday’s silk and lace mask to Charlotte Olympia’s cat-eye cover, here are seven shortcuts to a bright-eyed morning.

Why a Supercharged Moisturizer Beats the Best Highlighting Cream: Karolina Kurkova, Karlie Kloss, and More

Karolina Kurkova

Short of an authentic seaside bronze, what could possibly feel more luxe than a supple, super-hydrated radiance that trumps months of arctic blasts and bone-dry air? Spotted in Paris this week, Karolina Kurkovas incandescent glow made her smoldering black eyeliner feel downright ethereal. Also at H&M, Erin O’Connors petal pink lips and cheeks were a spring awakening with skin that looked like she had just spritzed on a hydrating mist—an in-cabin treat Karlie Kloss and Aymeline Valade know all too well, considering their supernaturally fresh glow. Chalk it up to a gifted facialist, ultrarich balm, or the proverbial eight glasses of water, but one thing’s for sure: With skin this healthy, mattifying powder is a crime.

Judging by the streets of Paris yesterday, friends who live and work together may dye together, too. At least that was the message taken away from stylists Nell Kalonji, Agata Belcen, and Emma Wyman, who dashed between shows letting their rainbow of respective hair shades catch the March sun. As idiosyncratic as Kalonji’s cloud of cool lilac curls, Belcen’s black-blue razor-sharp bangs, and Wyman’s loose, acid orange waves may be, the trio cultivates a like-minded aesthetic when mingling side by side. Which is to say, we’ve found the perfect excuse to invite our best mates over for an at-home dye job this weekend. B.Y.O. Manic Panic.

Why Balmain’s Diverse Cast of Runway Beauties Made for Our Favorite Model Moment of the Day in Paris

balmain-diversity

Backstage at Balmain today, makeup artist Tom Pecheux was musing on the definition of designer Olivier Rousteings seasonal runway muse. “She’s sexy, she’s confident,” he said, pausing for a moment to reflect. “She’s not just a woman—she’s a superwoman.” From a look around the room at the fashion house’s model cast, Rousteing takes a refreshingly expansive view when it comes to his definition of the term. In one corner, Adriana Lima —originally hailing from Salvador, Brazil—lounged in a makeup chair, while nearby, Jourdan Dunn chatted with fellow Londoner Lily Donaldson. Across the room, Indian stunner Bhumika Arora checked her phone while Jamaican newcomer Tami Williams posed for photographers and California girl Gigi Hadid caused a near stampede on her way to the dressing area. Representing more than thirteen nationalities and nearly as many skin tones when they stepped onto the runway a few minutes later, Rousteing’s lineup looked like the most comprehensive take on beauty we’ve seen on the runway yet this season. We hope it’s only the beginning of things to come in the days ahead.

11 Men Who’ve Gone Platinum: From Justin Timberlake to Jared Leto

Justin Timberlake blonde

In day two of The Great Jared Leto Hair Transformation, the actor traded in his signature dark brunette hair color for a cool shade of platinum. As newsworthy as his double-process may be, it’s neither Leto’s first time going blonde (he dyed both his hair and his eyebrows for 1999’s Fight Club), nor is it the first time a musician/actor has dipped his hair in bleach. Once the hair color of choice for screen sirens from Jean Harlow to Marilyn Monroe, men have found a more subversive quality in going platinum with a close crop. Color chameleon David Bowie embraced the sunny shade to conjure spectral stage presence on his 1983 Serious Moonlight tour. Rapper Eminem took advantage of the startling edge his arctic crew cut lent to his minimal look. Both Joshua Jackson and Ryan Gosling have tried on the hair color for menacing film roles, while athletes David Beckham and Dennis Rodman were no less intimidating on the field or court with a peroxided form of towhead. Here, a look back at the tradition of bottle-blonde men.

Is Earthy Pink Lipstick the New Parisian Red? Olivia Palermo, Jeanne Damas, and More Take the Shade for a Spin

Olivia Palermo

While there’s no shade that invokes vintage left-bank glamour quite like a saturated Coco red, earthy pinks that feel more like the natural lip color of our dreams are popping up on our favorite It Parisiennes and Fashion Week expats. Audrey Tautou was spotted at H&M wearing a deep, well-moisturized rose, while Olivia Palermo hit Carven in a brighter iteration of the shade topped with gloss. Even classic scarlet authority Jeanne Damas switched to a dewy sangria stain that still kept the focus on her famous plush lips. Here, three lessons in understated chic.

9 New Foundations That Are Changing the Coverage Game

Photographed by Craig McDean, Vogue, March 2011

When it comes to shopping for foundation, our criteria has been the more covert the coverage, the better. But a new generation of smart formulas is changing the game, providing all the benefits of camouflage—long-lasting, skin-matching, barely there—along with several multitasking 2.0 additions that we didn’t even know we needed. Armani’s Designer Lift Smoothing Firming Foundation is inspired by silk Lycra, supporting the skin with a slight lift while simultaneously concealing imperfections. Maybelline’s new Fit Me Foundation forgoes waxes and oils in favor of a translucent coating that allows your actual skin to make an appearance, while Skinleÿa by Sisley offers a prescription of choice anti-aging additives to smooth complexions while its gel-cream texture disguises blemishes. Diorskin Nude Air Serum is as fluid as they come, with a sheer texture that melts seamlessly into skin. Whether you’re after wrinkle-resistant color correction, weightless coverage, or a full day of budge-proof perfection, here are nine new foundations to manage your every complexion want and need.

3 Ways to Bring Edge to a Bob: Emma Roberts’s Lived-In Texture

Emma Roberts

You might think that snipping long layers into a sleek bob would mean trading in endless styling possibilities for reliable wash-and-go chic. But since Emma Roberts embraced fashion’s favorite cut, it seems the actress has found more versatility in her hair than ever. Her wispy high bun and sideswept bangs at a fundraiser in Los Angeles last night showed that an elegant knot isn’t just for below-the-shoulder manes, while her piece-y waves offered proof that with a few twists of a curling iron, even a blunt crop can feel like a shag—a look that felt just right with jeans and a tee thanks to a little slept-in texture. Here, three ways to give a precise bob a little lived-in edge.

Her clean, sun-kissed skin and rosy nude lips telegraphed a similar paired-down appeal—once again offering proof that playful and put-together can go hand in hand.

With the Milan runways celebrating fearless strokes of eyeliner and bold lips, the week’s best beauty looks took high-impact makeup for a test-drive from the front rows to the red carpet. Joan Smalls wore an inky abstract swoosh from the Fendi runway onto the street, while Kate Mara embraced the dark romance of an oxblood mouth. Hair was a different story: Slicked back (Lily James ), billowing under a fedora (Alessandra Ambrosio ), or in full slept-in glory (Alexa Chung ), easy styles offered a little laid-back yin to all the high-glam yang.

7 Beauty Lessons From Milan Fashion Week

Photographed by Kevin Tachman

What’s that old saying? Nothing risked, nothing gained. And if a look at the best hair and makeup moments at the Milan shows this week is any indication, the adage still holds true. From dramatic plays on proportion (Prada’s jewel-adorned ponytails!) to bold painterly strokes (Fendi’s liquid black eyes!), there were plenty of welcome surprises on the Italian beauty front. Perhaps the biggest shock of the week arrived at Gucci, where designer Alessandro Michele’s runway troupe let their hair down into dreamy, slept-on waves. The result was fashion month’s most memorable make-under yet. Here, seven things we learned from the Milan runways this week.

The 15 Best Street Style Beauty Moments from Milan

Julia Sarr-Jamois and Phoebe Arnold

Italian beauty is famously a celebration of opulent sensuality—hot-rolled hair, meticulously delineated eyeliner, sumptuous lipstick—but in the hands of our favorite street style stars in Milan, it’s a slightly off-kilter sense of polish that captured the attention of photographer Phil Oh. Take bloggers Gilda Ambrosio and Tina Leung, whose strict, razor-sharp parts only gained in appeal with a little lived-in static, while fashion editor Julia Sarr-Jamoiss exuberant curls cut right through the strict elegance of her menswear-inspired suit. Also embracing a modern effortlessness, stylist Chiara Tortire’s loose, romantic side plait looked like she had absentmindedly braided it between shows, and Lindsey Wixsons perfectly imperfect liquid swoosh promised to get better with a little end-of-day smudge. But perhaps it was Candela Novembre who best embodied the week’s unfussy elegance with her honey-tipped bob falling into thick, windblown pieces that would feel just as right surfside as with a statement coat. Here, a look at the unbeatable beauty moments from Milan. Your move, Paris.
