In day two of The Great Jared Leto Hair Transformation, the actor traded in his signature dark brunette hair color for a cool shade of platinum. As newsworthy as his double-process may be, it’s neither Leto’s first time going blonde (he dyed both his hair and his eyebrows for 1999’s Fight Club), nor is it the first time a musician/actor has dipped his hair in bleach. Once the hair color of choice for screen sirens from Jean Harlow to Marilyn Monroe, men have found a more subversive quality in going platinum with a close crop. Color chameleon David Bowie embraced the sunny shade to conjure spectral stage presence on his 1983 Serious Moonlight tour. Rapper Eminem took advantage of the startling edge his arctic crew cut lent to his minimal look. Both Joshua Jackson and Ryan Gosling have tried on the hair color for menacing film roles, while athletes David Beckham and Dennis Rodman were no less intimidating on the field or court with a peroxided form of towhead.
