“The return of makeup, from zero to full throttle,” is how backstage whiz Pat McGrath described the message of the fall 2015 collections in New York City, Milan, and Paris. “Things ranged from pure untouched skin to the bravest, most individualistic interpretation of beauty you can imagine.” For McGrath, who documented each look on her Instagram account (@patmcgrathreal) for her legions of faithful fans, that meant conjuring anything from tough-edged kohl eyes (Louis Vuitton) and pristine complexions (Valentino) to stained red lips (Bottega Veneta) and dramatically painted faces (Maison Margiela). Through it all, she says, there was one common theme of the season: “It was about character, bringing the face to life, capturing the personality of the girl.”
For many, the exquisite facial jewelry McGrath created for designer Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy—eyelashes dropping with pearls, suspended ruby teardrops, and glittering septum rings—crystallized the concept, becoming a runway highlight of the season. Although, according to McGrath, one backstage moment also ranked high on her list: the selfie she snapped with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson backstage at Valentino, where the actors made their much-documented Zoolander cameo. Here, a look back at her best Fashion Week beauty moments, which promise to offer fresh makeup inspiration as soon as this weekend.
