Petra Collins’s Cool-Girls Club: Capturing Pat McGrath’s Late-Night Makeovers

“I took so many photos!” said Petra Collins through a sleepy laugh this afternoon, taking a break between necessary naps. The photographer stayed up all night going through the thousands of images she snapped of her friends and acquaintances yesterday inside Brooklyn’s Kellogg’s Diner, where droves of the city’s creatives descended to celebrate Pat McGrath’s latest makeup endeavor, Phantom 002. “Everything looked so good, it was hard not to.” Stepping into the newly reimagined restaurant, outfitted with colored fluorescent lights, a disco ball, and tinsel draped from the ceiling, Collins felt entirely in her element. “It was really exciting for me,” she said, “because that’s my usual lighting setup, and all of my favorite subjects were there.”

In walked pals Tavi Gevinson, Jani Lucid, Paloma Elsesser, and Sahara Lin—who, though familiar models for Collins, were utterly reborn at the hands of McGrath, Guido Palau, and their team of hair and makeup assistants as they tested out a collective of colorful, high-impact pigments. Sporting swaths of bold eyeshadow, graphic slashes of eyeliner, and pops of metallic lip colors, Collins’s friends, the photographer recalled, couldn’t help but act a bit “sassier” as she shot the intimate portraits against every available backdrop. “Makeup is often such a feminine thing used to make someone appeal to someone else,” she said, “but the makeup last night was meant to empower each person.” And that alone made it a party to remember.
