Super Bowl 50–Bound? A Girlfriend’s Guide to San Francisco’s Best Manicures, Facials, and More

This Sunday, Super Bowl 50 comes to the Bay Area. And though the actual event may be taking place at Levi’s Stadium in nearby Santa Clara, a game-weekend vacation offers an opportunity to touch down in San Francisco and to explore the city’s unique beauty offerings. For those looking to balance football’s fanatic energy with a bit of pampering and relaxation, we’ve rounded up a menu of skin treatments, grooming services, and stretching sessions designed to kick off your Super Bowl celebration.

The Game Face
For those opting to forgo the face paint, a glowing complexion is the next best way to stand out in the stadium seats. Kristina Holey may be hard to catch—the sought-after facialist can also be found in New York and L.A., depending on the day—but a trip to her permanent treatment center in San Francisco is worth scheduling. The Bay Area native is one part scientist, one part skin-care guru: Before studying under French biochemist and face specialist Joëlle Ciocco in Paris, Holey mastered cosmetic formulation in Versailles, and embraces all things holistic. Facial massages, handcrafted masks, nutrition plans, and curated product suggestions ensure Holey’s clients maintain the best skin in the States—even when she’s out of town.

The Luxury Manicure
Manicures and pedicures are a full-on experience at Lux SF, best known for its natural nail services. Aside from its cultish colors—Deborah Lippmann, RGB, JINsoon, and the brand’s own in-house line, with hues named for noteworthy spots around the city—the Hayes Valley salon offers an array of specialized rituals for fingers and toes. Fragrant, exfoliating salt scrubs and milk baths, hydrating creams, and soy-based wraps containing shea butter and beeswax blends leave extremities relieved, refreshed, and primed for (perhaps team-themed) polish.

The Hair Hot Spot
Spoke & Weal, the joint project of editorial hairstylist Jon Reyman and color guru Christine Thompson, got its start in San Francisco’s Russian Hill (sister locations are now in L.A. and New York). Reyman, who hones his skills during New York Fashion Week, specializes in precise dry haircuts. If your mane is freshly shorn (or if Reyman is on the go), Aveda hair color, aldehyde- and formaldehyde-free keratin treatments, and blowouts are available to keep hair fresh and party-ready.

The Body Reboot
Football players shouldn’t be the only ones stretching it out this weekend. Show your body that you, too, are geared up for the game with a personalized yoga session at International Orange. The Pacific Heights spa offers one-on-one or semiprivate sessions customized to your skill level and needs. We recommend getting there early: Yogis enjoy access to spa amenities, including a steam room and relaxation lounge—a far cry from the locker room at Levi’s Stadium.

The Skin Scrub
Weary travelers or those with winter-parched skin should head to Nob Hill Spa at The Scarlet Huntington before (or after) partaking in tailgate activities. Get to know the city while hanging in the boutique spa’s pool area—which boasts views of the surrounding skyline—before a skin-softening body treatment. The Lavender Sugar Scrub combines the aromatic benefits of locally grown lavender with an exfoliating sugar scour to polish skin, which is then lathered in lavender buttercream lotion. Unlike the excess of snacks and beer that will likely be served on Sunday, this is an indulgence you won’t regret.

The Modern Apothecary
Fans of unique products won’t want to miss Veer & Wander, which is aptly named: Once you wander in, you’re not likely to wander back out for a while. The beauty boutique and salon is the brainchild of Connie McGrath, who sources niche beauty brands both locally and internationally. Stock up on rich lip colors by Ellis Faas with ingenious twist applicators for game day, and take one of Small Gunns’s graphic scented candles home.
