The Best Long Hair of All Time: From Brigitte Bardot to Gisele Bündchen

Tonight, Los Angeles’s Fonda Theatre will play host to Fleetwood Mac Fest, a two-night concert series celebrating the music of the now five-member band from London. A look at the lineup featuring Alison Mosshart and Joanna Newsom is proof that the Stevie Nicks–fronted band not only inspired legions of women to pick up guitars and write songs, but also to grow out their hair. Who could blame them?  Nicks, the good witch of rock ’n’ roll, entered the collective consciousness in 1975, dressed like a modern-day Lady of Shalott—her draping, heavily fringed blonde hair cutting an image as striking as her draping, heavily fringed dresses.

Long hair has always been synonymous with untamed allure. If we have learned anything from Botticelli’s Venus or Irving Penn’s 1999 portrait of Gisele Bündchen, a woman with hip-grazing waves need never be fully undressed. According to Yoko Ono and John Lennon, love is an emotion best expressed by growing out matching manes. Carrie Bradshaw may have lamented that she’d “never be the woman with perfect hair,” but when the power of waist-skimming lengths is in effect, perhaps you don’t have to. Here, a look back at the men and women who will make you want to cancel your next haircut and order Viviscal in bulk.
