The Magic of Manic Panic: Why Colorful Hair Is Street Style’s Ultimate Pick-Me-Up

Irene Kim

When leaden winter light meets a sun-starved complexion, a cheerful swipe of neon lipstick may offer a split-second antidote to a looming case of SAD, but the street style darlings at New York Fashion Week are opting for a more permanent mood-boosting strategy by way of exuberant Manic Panic dye jobs.

Less a countercultural statement than a gleefully off-kilter way to top off a camera-ready outfit, the saturated mermaid blues and cotton candy pinks spotted around the tents have all but replaced double-processed platinums as the statement hair to beat—with Korean blogger Irene Kim supercharging her kaleidoscopic pieces with another marker of downtown cool: dark roots. Even the reigning queen of reinvention, Lady Gaga, kept her screaming orange nod to David Bowie from the Grammys long enough to hit her stylist Brandon Maxwell’s show. Looks like this trend has a bright future.
