This Classic Accessory Is the Answer to Every Summer Beauty Crisis

Sun hats

Despite our best efforts (i.e., dry shampoo, face mist, blotting papers), the season’s scorching temperatures often leave us looking, well, less than entirely presentable. With another month of summer ahead of us, why not reach for an effortless fix in the form of a breezy sun hat? Shielding your skin from harsh rays while simultaneously deflecting eyes from your melted makeup and unruly hair, it’s the chic answer to all of your summer beauty crises.

If you’d like help figuring out how to wear one, you need only look to Instagram as your guide: A Maison Michel number recently called for a selfie or two (or three or four . . . ) as Alexa Chung walked the city streets, while a bikini-clad Romee Strijd plopped a wide-brimmed version atop her damp tresses. Spotted in the Greek islands, Alessandra Ambrosio sought out the shade, her brunette lengths just visible underneath a hat from her ále by Alessandra collection. Blondes, on the other hand, would do well to take a cue from Amanda Norgaard, who matched her golden waves to a woven straw topper.

Statement takes on the classic accessory call for subtle hair adjustments to match. In an open field, Hanneli Mustaparta framed her Chanel boater with a pair of twin plaits, while Phoebe Tonkin let her hair spill from a chapeau wrapped with a thick black ribbon as she plucked pink flowers from the vine. But it was Emily Ratajkowski who proved that when it comes to hats, the bigger the better. With face-framing wisps peeking out, her supersize version shielded not only her bronzed frame but also the pooch she held in her arms. Now that’s the dog days of summer done right.
