The Winter Bronzer Debate: Why You Should Be Switching Up Your Shade This Season

bronzer

Can you fake a year-round sun-kissed glow and become an eternal beacon of the Sunshine State—even in the dead of winter? The answer is yes, if you know a few tricks about the right tools and application. “The key to looking naturally bronzed in the winter lies in the formula,” says makeup artist Alice Lane, who recommends swapping your shimmery powder for a creamy matte texture. “Cream works better when it’s chilly out,” says Lane, “especially in places like New York where it’s so dry,” since the product provides extra moisture on those especially cold days.

Glittery versions only “accentuate wrinkles and make dehydrated skin look patchy and uneven.” The golden rule, however, when wearing bronzer when it’s freezing outside is “less is more,” and apply only to the high points on your face, like the cheekbones and the top of the forehead, rather than in an allover uniform veil. Lane finishes with a slick of warm lip color (in a palette of peaches, brick reds, or burnt oranges) to heighten the healthy vibe. Here, seven hydrating formulas to combat pasty winter skin in an instant—including Lane’s favorites by Tata Harper and NARS.
