As our platinum ambitions only amplify with every rocker dye job that surfaces this summer, whether it’s Saint Laurent muse Julia Cummings’s silver crop or Kristen Stewart’s side-swept peroxide bob, the concept of extreme color care is more relevant than ever. How to keep bleached strands from losing their luster—or worse, turning green after a dip in chlorine? We turned to our favorite color pros for their tips on protecting your processed lengths—and undoing the damage brought on by sun and saltwater.
“I like to treat icy blondes with purple-toned conditioners like the Davines Alchemic line,” says colorist Aura Friedman, who’s taken Sky Ferreira and model Soo Joo Park to the peak of platinum. Friedman warns against a violet addiction: “Overuse of these products can overtone your blonde, making it dull and flat-looking,” she explains. She suggests applying treatments only once a week, and never to golden shades, as purple color-care products are meant to neutralize and remove yellow pigment from hair. Soho-based colorist Lena Ott—responsible for keeping blondes like Scarlett Johansson, Doutzen Kroes, and Anja Rubik impossibly brilliant at her salon, Suite Caroline—agrees that coating strands with Christophe Robin’s violet-hued Baby Blond hair mask is ideal for toning, but not dulling, processed hair. “It’s perfect for controlling unwanted yellow without killing all the brightness and leaving the color looking lifeless,” she says.
Ott and Friedman also agree on one surprisingly easy trick for preventing that dreaded shade of green after a chlorinated dip: Pre-wet your hair before diving into the deep end. “Think of your hair like a sponge,” explains Ott of the simple summer hack. “If you wet it first with nonchlorinated water, it won’t be able to suck up as much of the chlorinated water.” Friedman recommends soaking hair in a blend of coconut oil mixed with B3 Brazilian Bond Builder’s Instant Restore & Protect Reconstructor for another color protection bonus: “This concoction will prevent your hair from absorbing the chlorine, and it’s also great for sitting in the sun, as coconut oil has a natural SPF.”
