Whether you spent your Fourth of July lounging on the beach, sailing, or grilling alfresco, chances are your skin saw its fair share of the sun. After all, the opportunity to take in the great outdoors is nearly as much a part of the holiday as the fireworks—meaning that even the most diligent SPF fanatic might be feeling the burn. Coming to the rescue are a new wave of products specially formulated to soothe and repair sun-exposed skin.
Although after-sun products cannot erase sun damage altogether, according to New York City dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman, they are able to assist the skin with—and sometimes even speed up—the recovery process. “The sun dries your skin out a lot,” she explains. “The concept of these products is antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and hydration.”
For those feeling parched, Jaliman recommends moisturizing with products that contain coconut oil, shea butter, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid, all of which help hydrate. However, if you spent one too many hours in the sun, she suggests calming scorched skin with products that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients such as chamomile, bisabolol, or aloe—the latter of which, taken from the leaf of an aloe plant or bought as pure aloe gel, offers an inexpensive, time-tested remedy. Be sure to avoid perfumed products, though, which can aggravate already damaged skin.
Ultimately, sunburns will cause peeling no matter what, but by staying moisturized, Jaliman notes, you can lessen peeling and in effect prolong your summer glow—and who doesn’t want that? Stash a bottle of Herbivore Botanicals’s natural aloe mist in your beach bag for a stealth spritz of moisture on your way home, or take a moment to yourself and lather your limbs in La Mer’s luxe After Sun Enhancer. Either way, your skin will thank you.
