Tonight, Karl Lagerfeld unleashed a full-blown fashion fantasy for Fendi’s Fall 2016 couture collection, held in celebration of the house’s 90th anniversary, by routing a glass walkway over Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain and outfitting his muses in a series of gilded robe coats and fluttering, sylphlike gowns. Of course, these creations demanded equally dreamlike hair—leading to what just might be the textbook definition of surreal summer beauty.
Backstage, hairstylist Sam McKnight parted models’ lengths down the center, then wound them into soft, fuzzy ringlets that recalled a Pre-Raphaelite painting before loosely pinning the front sections in back, crown-like, and securing the curls with a length of pale fur ribbon. The resulting look evoked the legends and fairy tales that inspired Lagerfeld’s show—and felt like a midsummer night’s dream.
