Diane Kruger celebrates her 40th birthday today. The German-born star has been embracing four decades on the planet with Instagrams featuring sky-high platforms, dinners out, talk show appearances in honor of The Infiltrator—which hit theaters Wednesday—and a welcome array of cheeky, come-as-you-are selfies. A close-up has always been kind to her. The blonde stunner made her name in the modeling world in 1996 as the face of Chanel Allure perfume and, the same year, starring in an iconic sand-strewn, bare-faced photograph by Patrick Demarchelier for Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Giò.
And though her career has made the move from glossy page to silver screen—with films like Troy, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, and this summer’s Fathers and Daughters under her belt—not much has changed in the beauty department. Kruger has the kind of complexion that looks almost better bare, though the actress pulls off a smudgy smoky eye or a bold red lip with aplomb. It’s as if the years don’t touch her. To her credit, Kruger’s timeless look likely has to do with her wholly evident comfort in her own skin: Whether posing on the red carpet, on-set, or from the privacy of her own home, her eyes (and captions) reflect a sense of humor and the glint of an insouciant, devil-may-care outlook. Kruger is here for the party, take it or leave it—and we, for one, think 40 may just be her best year yet.
