The Best Multitasker for Your Summer Makeup Game—And How to Use It Like a Pro

cheek tints

Summer is coming in hot next month, and as the sun comes out and jackets come off, the desire to lift a few layers (and minutes) from our makeup routine is intensifying. To help decode the newest rush of multitasking lip and cheek stains (not to mention how to apply them), we turned to editorial makeup pro Suzy Gerstein, who’s used them on clients like Christy Turlington Burns and Lou Doillon. “It’s a simple yet effective makeup bag refresh,” Gerstein says, “and an easy way to sharpen up your look but still keep it low-key.”

Gerstein favors paraben-free, organic formulas like W3ll People Universalist Multi-Sticks, Kjaer Weis Lip Tints (which also work on cheeks). Her “latest obsession” is Olio E Osso, a Portland, Oregon-based brand: “The Currant shade of their Balm Stick looks really dark in the package but gives the perfect dewy, believable-looking flush for any skin tone,” she says. For foolproof application, she suggests tapping color onto lips and moisturized cheeks with clean fingers, then softening the edges of blush with a damp beauty blender dipped in tinted moisturizer “for a seamless finish,” and spot concealing with a satiny product like Charlotte Tilbury’s Miracle Wand.

To play up shine for a night out, Gerstein suggests topping bright lip stains with clear lacquer: “I love a blood orange– or cherry popsicle–hued lip tint layered under clear gloss,” she says. For cheeks, try dabbing a bit of highlighter over the stain. “Adding a pearlescent tone like the one found in Pat McGrath’s new Skin Fetish 003 will give your look more polish.” Bonus: The balm side of McGrath’s stick can be layered over lips and cheeks for nonstick shine that won’t catch hair when you’re dancing.

Above, 10 multitasking tints to speed up your spring-to-summer makeup game.
