Why the Best Summer Lipstick Isn’t a Lipstick at All

Full lipstick in summer is a bit criminal. Where clean skin and beach waves play into that seasonal ease, a traditional cream formula is inarguably high-maintenance and has the unfortunate habit of melting in the heat. Luckily, your summertime struggle is solved in one step—by reaching for one perpetually overlooked makeup bag staple: lip liner.

Why turn to a tinted pencil over a creamy bullet? According to makeup artist Daniel Martin, it’s the secret to getting an easy matte finish that’s more resistant to humidity. “The formulas tend to be a little more dry, so they last longer than some lipsticks,” he says. Then there’s the added control, which lets you craft a more accurate shape that lasts in the heat. (To get rid of a visibly lined look, however, you’ll want to soften the edges with a fingertip or brush.)

Two quick points of note: A formula that uses a well-hydrated base is key to drawing clean lines, by keeping the pencil from tugging against the skin. (Martin likes Dior’s Rouge Contour in a universally pretty shade called Thrilling Plum.) If the liner-alone finish is too flat for your taste, he suggests adding a balm on top. “That’s always a nice trick for weddings, if you want a bit of color but don’t want to always worry about touch-ups.”

Above, nine new lip liners to toss into your beach tote, for a summer beauty secret with serious staying power.
