Going Rouge: How to Wear the New Statement Blush

Paris Fashion Week may have just ended, but as cooling temperatures leave many of us craving a dose of color, Spring’s runway makeup is already taking to the streets. Among the easiest and prettiest catwalk techniques to re-create is a jolt of lively blush à la Chanel and Kenzo’s Spring 2017 shows—a look currently lighting up our Instagram feeds on the likes of Lupita Nyong’o and Petite Meller. But how to get the new cool-girl cheeks without looking like a clown?

According to Los Angeles–based Chanel makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, the secret is all in the application. “Avoid the apples of the cheeks and aim higher, toward the temples and forehead.” The higher you go, the “more sophisticated the look.” Goodwin also suggests applying color with a fluffy brush, and then patting a moisturizer-soaked beauty blender over the area. “The effect is skin that looks softened and airbrushed,” she explains. For best results, apply blush outside in direct sunlight when possible.

If you’re not ready to take the fuchsia or brick-red plunge like Nyong’o, “peach blush is every woman’s friend,” notes Goodwin. “It’s the most flattering and friendliest color that helps you look a little more pulled together.” And while a matte formula works with most skin types, Goodwin recommends using a powder or cream formula with a hint of iridescence: “It helps the product blend in easier and gives skin a radiant glow.” As for her own color of choice, Goodwin names Chanel’s Hyperfresh: “It’s super-fun and great to experiment with.”

That last point is key when it comes to the makeup of the moment. “There really are no rules,” Goodwin says. “A bright blush just feels so right now.” Here, seven ways to channel your inner ’80s pop star—or simply brighten your day.
