The Lolita remains the ne plus ultra of Japanese subcultural style, recognized the world over for its whimsical reworking of English period fashion—panniered tutus and a twee, doll-like approach to hair and makeup. So when Argentine creative director and Instagram star Sofía Sanchez de Betak arrived in Tokyo a few weeks ago, a friendly local recommended she stop by Maison de Julietta in her free time to experience a complete Lolita transformation.

Arriving at the candy-colored spot, just off Takeshita Dori, De Betak dove headfirst into the ama-loli world, a further subculture that emphasizes sweet pastels and feminine frills. “I specified, ‘I want full-on Lolita, no compromises!’” De Betak said. “Eyelashes? Yes. Eyebrows? Yes. Wig? Pink!” Despite the numerous steps for hair and makeup (sky-high fake lashes, rosy circles of blush), the entire process took but 30 minutes in all, packed into the video above, yielding what may be Tokyo’s most captivating makeover—and certainly the cutest.
