If the vibrant makeup at Kenzo this season—rouged temples, fire-engine red lips—was one of the defining looks of Spring 2017, it also reflected the history of the house. Founder Kenzo Takada, a Japanese-born designer who moved to Paris, showed his first collection in 1970, and quickly became known for his mash-up of ethnic influences—and above all, his love of color. (It’s no surprise that the retired designer is now an artist.) The techniques on view for Spring referenced those seen in some of the archival Polaroids taken by legendary fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez, which Humberto Leon and Carol Lim used as prints in the collection, as well as Takada’s Spring 1982 show.
