“We just hit it off—we’re both brunette, curly-haired girls,” says makeup artist Tina Turnbow. She’s speaking of actress Olivia Thirlby, who she’s been working with for five years now and with whom she’s developed a special rapport. So, when Thirlby returned to New York City this week for the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her latest movie, Between Us, it was all about comfort and ease—and crafting a long-lasting look, alongside hairstylist Patrick Kyle, designed to endure a full day of parties and press junkets. “She’s a great canvas,” Turnbow says of Thirlby’s ability to carry off a bold crimson lip and minimal skin. Here, Turnbow breaks down her guide to the indie star’s effortless red carpet makeup, from a brightening face mask to a simple setting spray.
“I love to use Colbert MD’s Illumino Anti-Aging Brightening Mask before applying makeup because it instantly brightens and evens out the skin tone. While Olivia was getting her hair done, we put one on for around 20 minutes—it helps cut back on the amount of makeup needed.”
“Revlon ColorStay is a long-lasting liner that I kept close to the lash line and diffused out, then I used two smudgy Urban Decay 24/7 pencils to create a soft, smoky eye. The CoverGirl Professional Remarkable mascara never smudges, even on a long night, and I always use Laura Mercier Radiance Primer to add a nice glow. Chantecaille makes my favorite tinted moisturizer—after the mask, we didn’t need a heavy foundation—and the Tata Harper stain went on the apples of the cheeks.”
“We wanted to do a modern Audrey Hepburn look—they have similar brows!—with a strong red lip, for which I used Burt’s Bees lip crayon. It’s richly pigmented, but doesn’t bleed, and is easy to retouch. Before Olivia left for the premiere, I used the Urban Decay All-Nighter Setting Spray to keep the makeup fresh. The look stayed through pictures, the cocktail party, and the red carpet—it just worked!”
